The Toolkit

Queer Safer Spaces: Why & How

This is an action-oriented toolkit for anyone designing, running, or hosting spaces who genuinely wants to make them more inclusive for LGBTQIA+ people. You don't need to be an expert in queer theory to get started. What you need is the willingness to listen and take action.

The toolkit is organized around three questions.

Why are safer queer spaces important?
A historical and personal introduction into queer safer spaces and why they matter. This chapter raises awareness, forming the foundation for everything that follows.

How do you create safer queer spaces?
This chapter provides practical tools and workshop guides for space holders, designers, and organizers. From inclusive house rules to a queer bystander intervention workshop and more: these are concrete starting points, not checklists.

Who enters a space?
A chapter for everyone in the space, not just those who organise or manage it. By actively involving visitors as well, this chapter encourages everyone to reflect on how they show up in shared spaces.
